Grieving Godfrey Crump makes a life changing decision to move his two daughters, seventeen year old Ernestine and fifteen year old Ermine from Florida to Brooklyn, NY after the death of his wife. This move is prompted by his newly found meaning in religion.
Told through the eyes of Ernestine, we watch as she struggles to adapt to her new life in her new home during the Jim Crowe era in the fifties, her father's obsession and unfounded devotion to his faith, the challenges of embracing different ways of viewing the world around her, and through it all, daring to want more for herself.
ERNESTINE CRUMP: Female, 17 African American, smart, self-aware, determined, romantic, daydreamer.
GODFREY CRUMP: Male 35 African American, meticulous, somber, devoted, grieving.
LILY: Female, 30's, African American, rebellious, intellectual, boisterous, sexually confident.
ERMINA CRUMP: Female, 15, African American, spirited, sassy, carefree, mischievous.
